DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS FROM OUR PASTOR
So this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which is translated, “God with us.” Matthew 1:22-23
If you take away Jesus and leave humanity to construct its own picture of God, what a different picture we are left with. You could be left with an impersonal force or energy, incapable of care, love or relationship, or an angry Thor, showering thunderbolts down at his enemies. But these are not biblical pictures of God. God is the Lord of all creation and the Judge of all humanity, but He is also Emmanuel, “God with us.”
That preposition with speaks of identification. He is inconceivably other, but He is also one of us. He not only took our state, but He took our problems, for God “made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us.” (IICorinthians 5:21)
But God intended that with to be reciprocal. He desires to be with us and wants us to desire to be with Him. God wants us to be with Him in terms of destiny (the future state of heaven and the resurrection), but also with Him in terms of character. (The present work of the Holy Spirit in us and in the church).
That is why the New Testament refers to every believer as a saint. The Father, through Christ’s sacrifice of Himself as one of us, can put His life into us (II Peter 1:4), who, by nature, are sinners. Jesus is “Emmanuel, God with us.” Will we respond and be with Him?
